1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat or gluten-free)

1/4 cup BBQ sauce (plus extra for serving)

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon cumin

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 slider buns

Lettuce leaves or arugula, for garnish

Sliced tomatoes, for garnish

Avocado slices, for garnish

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    Mash the chickpeas: In a large mixing bowl, place the drained and rinsed chickpeas. Use a fork or a potato masher to mash them until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

      Combine ingredients: Add the breadcrumbs, BBQ sauce, chopped onion, minced garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper to the mashed chickpeas. Mix well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

        Form patties: With your hands, divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about the size of your slider buns. Place the patties on the prepared baking sheet.

          Bake the patties: Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the patties are golden brown and crispy on the outside.

            Prepare the buns: While the patties are baking, you can toast the slider buns lightly in a pan or in the oven for a few minutes until golden.
