Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

¾ cup brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup buttermilk or milk

1 cup fig jam (homemade or store-bought)

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

1 tablespoon sugar (for topping)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners or grease the cups with non-stick spray.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and fig jam until well blended.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk and fig jam mix. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; be careful not to over-mix. If desired, fold in the chopped walnuts or pecans for added texture.

Fill the Muffin Tins: Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups, filling each about 2/3 full.

Sprinkle Sugar Topping: Sprinkle a little sugar on top of each muffin for a sweet crunch.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool: Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Enjoy: Serve warm or at room temperature and delight in the sweet and savory flavors of fig jam!
