Puff pastry, known for its light and flaky texture, has a rich history that dates back centuries. Its origins can be traced back to the early 17th century in France, where it was initially developed as a method to create a light, airy crust for pastries and pies. The technique of lamination, which involves folding layers of dough with butter, results in a pastry that puffs up beautifully when baked. This versatility makes puff pastry a staple in various cuisines worldwide, from French pastries to Middle Eastern baklava.

Ingredients

1 package (1 lb) of ground beef

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 package (17.3 oz) of puff pastry sheets (2 sheets)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Sesame seeds (for topping)

Optional: pickles, lettuce, and ketchup for serving

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cook the Filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Season the Mixture: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well and ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed. Remove the skillet from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.

Add Cheese: Once the beef mixture is cool enough to handle, fold in the shredded cheddar cheese until evenly incorporated.

Prepare the Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into 3-inch squares (you should get 12 squares from each sheet, totaling 24 squares).

Fill the Pastries: Place about 1 tablespoon of the beef and cheese mixture into the center of each pastry square. Be careful not to overfill to avoid leaking.

Seal the Pastries: Fold the corners of each pastry square over the filling to create a pocket or triangle shape. Press the edges with a fork to seal completely.

Egg Wash and Sprinkle: Place the filled pastries on the prepared baking sheet. Brush each with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pastries are golden brown and puffed.

Serve and Enjoy: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. These Mini Cheeseburger Puff Pastries can be served plain or with optional toppings like pickles, lettuce, and a side of ketchup.
