1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup packed brown sugar

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup buttermilk

For the Caramel Sauce:

1 cup granulated sugar

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces

½ cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Topping:

1 cup chopped pecans

1 cup chocolate chips

Extra caramel sauce for drizzling

Instructions

Prepare the Cake:

    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

      - In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.

        - In a separate mixing bowl, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

          - Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

            - Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk, and mix until just combined.

              Bake the Cake:

                - Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

                  - Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

                    Make the Caramel Sauce:

                      - In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the granulated sugar, stirring constantly until it becomes a golden amber color.

                        - Add the butter pieces, stirring until melted and combined.

                          - Slowly pour in the heavy cream while continuing to stir (be careful as it may bubble).

                            - Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow the caramel to cool slightly.

                              Assemble the Cake:

                                - Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the first layer and sprinkle half of the chopped pecans and half of the chocolate chips on top.

                                  - Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the caramel, pecans, and chocolate chip layers.

                                    Finishing Touches:

                                      - Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over the top of the cake and garnish with any remaining pecans and chocolate chips.

                                        - Slice and serve this indulgent Turtle Caramel Cake while moist and delicious!
